Crossing the Pennines on the M62

Leaving Halifax, the route follows Salterhebble Hill and the A629 up through Ainley Top before joining the M62 westbound. This stretch of motorway is well known for climbing to the highest point of any motorway in England, close to Saddleworth Moor, before descending toward Greater Manchester.

Junction 5 of the M56 is signed specifically for Manchester Airport, feeding onto a dedicated spur road that leads directly to the terminals. There is no need to navigate ordinary town traffic once you leave the motorway, since the spur road was built purely to serve the airport.

Overnight roadworks occasionally affect this stretch of the M56 close to the airport, so drivers check live traffic updates before setting off on early departures. Even with occasional diversions, the alternative local roads around the spur are well signposted and add only a few minutes.

Arriving at Manchester Airport
