The Drive to Heathrow Airport

Westbound via the A4 and M4

The primary route heads west from central London along the A4 through Hammersmith, Chiswick, and Brentford before joining the M4. This stretch of road carries some of London's most consistent traffic volumes, particularly between Chiswick Roundabout at M4 Junction 1 and the Heston area further west. Your driver monitors conditions throughout and will use parallel roads - the Great West Road or local Hounslow routes - if the main carriageway is heavily backed up.

Once on the M4 the airport is reached quickly. Terminals 2 and 3, which sit at the heart of the Heathrow complex, are accessed via Junction 4 off the M4. Terminals 4 and 5 both require Junction 4B, which connects via the M4 spur. Your driver will be directed to the correct terminal based on your airline and flight details, which you provide when booking.

Traffic and Timing

The westbound M4 corridor between Junctions 3 and 4B is one of the most consistently congested roads in England during peak hours. Weekday mornings from 07:30 to 09:30 and late afternoons from 16:30 to 18:30 can add 30 to 40 minutes to the standard journey time from central London. Early morning and late evening transfers - typically before 06:30 or after 21:00 - run considerably faster, often reaching the airport in 35 to 40 minutes from Zone 1.

We recommend allowing substantial buffer time for any Heathrow departure, and our booking system builds this in automatically. For morning peak flights, the algorithm applies additional time to ensure you reach the terminal well ahead of check-in deadlines. Heathrow advises passengers to arrive at least two hours before short-haul departures and three hours before long-haul flights.

Arriving at the Correct Terminal

Heathrow operates four active terminals - 2, 3, 4 and 5 - each serving different airlines and alliances. Terminal 5 handles British Airways and Iberia exclusively. Terminal 2 serves Star Alliance carriers including Lufthansa, United, and Singapore Airlines among others. Terminal 3 handles a mix of long-haul carriers including Virgin Atlantic, Delta, and Emirates. Terminal 4 serves additional airlines including some Gulf and Asian carriers.

Confirming the correct terminal at the time of booking removes any uncertainty on the day. Your driver will drop you at the dedicated departures entrance for your specific terminal, not at a central bus interchange. This matters particularly at Heathrow, where the terminals are separated by several minutes of internal road distance and walking a terminal-length with heavy bags is genuinely inconvenient.

Drop-Off at Departures

Each Heathrow terminal has a dedicated short-stay drop-off area immediately outside the departures entrance.
