Leaving Leicester, the route follows Welford Road and the A6 south-east towards Kettering, joining the A14 for the long, largely dual-carriageway run across Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire. This stretch passes close to Huntingdon before curving south towards Cambridge, where the road meets the M11.

At Cambridge the route joins the M11 heading south, running past Bishops Stortford before reaching Junction 8. This junction is home to Birchanger Green, the only service station on the M11, and connects directly onto the A120 towards the airport.

Junction 8 can back up at peak holiday periods, since it is the main road link for the whole airport as well as Bishops Stortford. Once through the junction, the final few miles run along the A120 directly to the terminal forecourt.

The whole run from Leicester typically takes between 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes outside of peak travel windows, longer if roadworks or holiday traffic affect the A14 corridor. Stansted operates from a single terminal building, so there is no risk of arriving at the wrong drop-off point.
