Leaving the City

From most parts of Edinburgh, drivers join the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, which links directly into the M9 near the Gogar and Newbridge junctions on the west side of the city. This stretch passes South Gyle and the Edinburgh Park business district before the motorway proper begins its run north west toward Stirling.

The road then bypasses Linlithgow rather than cutting through the town centre. Traffic is generally light outside of the weekday commuter windows between 07:30 and 09:00 and 16:30 and 18:30, when queues can build around the Newbridge and Kirkliston junctions.

Once clear of Linlithgow the road opens out considerably, and on a quiet run the stretch toward the Falkirk area takes well under half an hour to cover.

Through Falkirk and Approaching Stirling

Past Linlithgow the M9 runs close to the Kelpies at Helix Park, the towering horse head sculptures that mark the edge of Falkirk. The motorway bypasses both Falkirk and Grangemouth entirely, so through traffic avoids either town centre.

Around Junction 7 the M9 briefly shares its number with the M876, a short stretch that serves traffic heading toward the Kincardine Bridge. North of here the motorway becomes noticeably quieter, one of the least congested stretches of any Scottish motorway.

The M9 finally meets the M80 at Junction 9, known locally as Pirnhall or the Bannockburn interchange, on the edge of Stirling. Stirling Services sits at this roundabout, useful for a short break on longer trips. From here it is a brief run into the city, with the castle visible long before you arrive.
