Leaving Bristol, the route heads south-west to pick up the M5 before joining the M4 heading west. This carries the vehicle across the Prince of Wales Bridge, the second Severn crossing that spans the estuary between England and Wales. Since December 2018 the tolls on this bridge have been permanently removed, so there is no additional charge for the crossing in either direction.

After crossing into Wales, the M4 continues west through Newport and on towards Cardiff. The driver takes Junction 33, which connects with the A4232 and feeds south toward the Vale of Glamorgan. From there the route follows the A48 through Barry before turning onto the B4265 into Rhoose, where Cardiff Airport is located.

Approaching Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Airport sits at Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, roughly 12 miles south-west of Cardiff city centre. It is a compact, single-terminal airport, which means the drop-off is straightforward. Because the airport is reached via rural Vale of Glamorgan roads in the final few miles, the approach is far calmer than the motorway sections that precede it. There are no urban congestion points to navigate once you leave the A48. On a clear run the final leg from Junction 33 to the terminal takes around 20 minutes.
